This post is part of the personal sales and marketing crash course project I am undertaking in December. If you’re interested in reading about the goals I set or what I accomplished at the end of the month, feel free to click around!

We live in a fast-paced world. Our technology and devices are always evolving. There are infinite ways to market using social media and online influencers. Shouldn’t email marketing be dead by now?

Breaking news: Email marketing is as alive as it was twenty years ago.

When used correctly, newsletters can be one of the most effective digital marketing tools.

This month I explored email marketing and built a newsletter for a company called Cre8tives.

This post will walk you through my process of curating the newsletter and setting up the email for seamless inbox delivery using Mailchimp.

The Beginning Stages: Inspiration Behind the Writing

Throughout the process, I made it my goal to remain faithful to the brand Randalyn Hill, the founder of Cre8tives, had already fostered for her newsletter each month.

I used her past newsletters and inspiration to write the December 2020 edition. By combing through her previous newsletters, I was able to gain valuable insight on what resonated with the subscribers based on the open rates provided by Mailchimp.

I obtained a sense of the personality that Randi has established in her writing. Although I inevitably have my own writing voice, I strived to create a newsletter that represented the Cre8tives brand as a whole.

Each week, I curated multiple questions or quotes to provoke creativity and help tear down the barriers surrounding the pursuit of that creativity. I collaborated in a shared Google Doc with Randi to receive feedback on what I was writing.

Email Design

Using Mailchimp, I was able to design the look of the newsletter. I used a template Randi had created to ensure consistency with previous newsletters. I was also given a branding guide for colors and fonts. I made sure to utilize these resources to create a finished product that represented the Cre8tives community.

Mailchimp makes it simple to drag and drop elements directly into the email body. I seamlessly customized the color palette and fonts to bring the newsletter to life during the design stage.

Finishing Touches

After I got the body of the email looking fresh, I moved on to the subject line. I aimed to keep it short and sweet. Randi titles each of her newsletters using the format Cre8tives <Month, Year> Edition. I chose not to stray from this subject line template.

I personalized the preview text, which is the snippet of text next to the subject line in an inbox.

Lastly, I filled in the To and From entries. I made sure the newsletter was set to hit each recipient’s inbox of the Cre8tives subscriber list.

I checked the list twice and hit send!

It feels so good to have created something that can be so valuable to someone from the ground up. I can’t wait to start writing the next one!

That’s a Wrap!

If you made it this far, I know you’ll want to read the finished newsletter (and subscribe to the Cre8tives list).
